After 4 weeks and going into the half-term break t

After 4 weeks and going into the half-term break the league tables are looking like this.

On another warm sunny October Saturday the 1s bagg

On another warm sunny October Saturday the 1s bagged a 5-0 win and 3pts from a jolly encounter with Winscombe 2s, where @em.ily.h_ , @michellegregory104 and @ciderbolt got a goal apiece and @soph.ie1 tucked away 2.

They were followed on the @merchantsacademysports pitch by the 3s and a lively @uwehockey team who put on a good show for the plentiful home and away supporters. Knowle made a strong defensive effort and despite the final 7-0 scoreline, there were plenty of positives to take into visit to @bristolandwesthc after half-term.

Meanwhile the 2s were on the road at @wickladieshockey 2s and came away empty handed with a 4-0 defeat, but again there was lots of hockey to be pleased with and build-on when they welcome @bapslhc to Merchants after the break.

It's the last one before the half-term league break tomorrow and all three teams are in action again.

The 1s welcome Winscombe 2s to @merchantsacademysports at 10am

The 2s are off to see @wickladieshockey 2s at Bristol Met Academy at 11:30am

And the 3s complete this week's Merchants double-header against @uwehockey ‘s Saturday side at 11:45am.

The line between contact and non-contact sport can

The line between contact and non-contact sport can get a little blurry, and while a bit of contact is pretty inevitable in hockey, it's technically a non-contact sport and there are rules to minimise it and prevent a game of ice-hockey breaking out.

Essentially you mustn't use your body to prevent your opponents having a sporting chance of getting the ball. That means;
- no dribbling down the pitch backwards shoving tacklers out of the way with your bum (aka 'backing in'), or sideways leading with your shoulder;
- no wild slide tackling, body-checking or off-the-ball-shoving that might intimidate or impede another player;
- no running or standing between your teammate in possession and an incoming opponent to prevent them being able to make a tackle - that's a 'third party obstruction'.
- as a keeper, deliberately smothering the ball and preventing attackers legitimately playing the ball is also an obstruction.

For an offence to be called up as an obstruction, remember it's also important that you are in a position to legitimately play the ball (or attempt to) though.

Back on the rules, the ball can travel pretty hard and pretty fast in hockey, so to help keep it as safe as practicable, there are some limitations on how players can strike the ball.

Check out FIH’s ‘How to Hockey episode 5 - What is dangerous play?’ on @youtube to get the idea.

Undercutting with force on the forehand edge is a no-no. See ZigZagHockey ‘Forehand edge hit’ Youtube vid for a demo.

Any play that results in danger is liable to be penalised, both from outfield players and goalkeepers - however unintentional or unlucky it might be... Watch the @usafieldhockey ‘Behind the Whistle: Danger off the Goal Post’ on YouTube for an example.

It's the responsibility of everyone on the pitch to keep each other safe, and the umpires are there to help us do that.

After the 2s' game was cancelled at the eleventh hour, enjoyable games for the 1s and 3s ended in defeat but that's always nicer in sunshine than soggy and there was still some good hockey played by all.

Whether the umpire calls advantage or blows for a penalty, their decisions are based on the same set of offences (accidental or intentional), which can be caused by sticks, bodies, or players being in the wrong place in relation to the play.

Like you might hear in rugby, to help keep the gam

Like you might hear in rugby, to help keep the game flowing umpires can use their judgement to call advantage and let play go on when a foul is committed. They might do so when a better opportunity for the offended player or team is likely to come from playing on than if they are awarded a set piece penalty, particularly in attack.

Coming out with possession isn't always an advantage though - for advantage to apply the player/team must be able to develop their play.

With that in mind, it's important to stay alert and play on to 'til you hear the whistle.

The weather forecast was upsettingly accurate this

The weather forecast was upsettingly accurate this morning and all three matches were decidedly damp, fortunately the hockey brightened things up though.

2s did a 5-1 win against @wottonhockeyclub (sorry we couldn’t fix the weather guys!) with @soph.ie1 bagging a hatrick 🍺 and @heyitsgracee_ and @honeyymr joining her on the scoresheet.

A lurgy-depleted ten-woman 3s team finished up 7-1 down against the lovely ladies of @old_bristolians_hockey, with Fleur Silk scoring her first Knowle goal.

The 1s followed the 2s lead against Nailsea at @merchantsacademysports with a 5-1 win. @em.ily.h_ and @kiragardner_ got a brace of goals apiece and @ciderbolt added the fifth.

Well done everyone for some great team performances in tough conditions, and a big thank you to our umpiring duo @sue6360 and @chrisverrall and supporters for braving the elements too!!

3) PENALTY STROKE

Penalty stokes are like penalties in football - a one-on-one shot from a stationary ball on the P-spot for particularly bad fouls or preventing goals illegally. They’re awarded for:

a) an offence by a defender in the circle which prevent the probable scoring of a goal

b) an intentional offence in the circle by a defender against an opponent who has possession of the ball or an opportunity to play the ball

(If the ball hits a piece of equipment lying in the circle and a probable goal is prevented, a penalty stroke may be awarded)

2) PENALTY CORNERS

AKA ‘Short Corners’, penalty corners are awarded for a number of different things, mostly varying ways of defenders being naughty in their circle and 23 (we’ll come on to that later).

They give a good goal scoring opportunity by limiting the number of players permitted to defend the attacking team.

They come from open play, and as long as an attacker plays the ball legally within the circle before it passes over the goal-line into the goal, it can be hit, flicked, scooped, pushed, deflected, scuffed, nudged, etc.
